Issuing a Bad Check Penalties in Salt Lake City
The possible punishments for issuing a bad check depends on the value of the check or draft or series of checks or drafts made or drawn in Utah within a period of six months. Generally, these crimes are classified as follows:
- Less than $500 — Class B misdemeanor punishable by up to six months in jail and/or a fine of up to $1,000;
- $500 or more but less than $1,500 — Class A misdemeanor punishable by up to one year in jail and/or a fine of up to $2,500;
- $1,500 or more but less than $5,000 — Third-degree felony punishable by up to five years in prison and/or a fine of up to $5,000; or
- $5,000 or more — Second-degree felony punishable by up to 15 years in prison and/or a fine of up to $10,000.
